MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team trailed MSOE 61-49 with just over six minutes left in Saturday's NACC matchup at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. From that moment on, the Eagles posted a 15-4 run and had the ball down one with 19 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for the Eagles, MSOE had one last defensive stand in them, resulting in a 65-64 setback for Edgewood College on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Max Fernholz helped spark the Eagles (3-10, 2-6 NACC) run over the final minutes. Fernholz made his first appearance with 6:13 remaining and buried a pair of 3-point jump shots during the 15-4 stretch. His second 3-point make put the Eagles within four (63-59) with 3:21 to go.
-
Ben Seefeld hit a pair of free throws with 2:39 left on the clock to bring the Eagles within two at 63-61. MSOE would make its final basket on the ensuing possession, a jumper by Travis Ballard. Ballard finished with a game-high 23 points for the Raiders.
- On the Eagles next trip,
Jake Negus got to the rim and finished through contact to make the score 65-63. Negus would tack on the free throw and the MSOE lead was down to 65-64 with 2:16 left to play. That would be all the scoring for either team as both defense's stepped up down the stretch, allowing MSOE to escape with a one-point victory.
- Edgewood College struggled shooting in the opening half on Saturday, which resulted in a 34-26 MSOE lead. The Eagles shot just 31 percent (9-for-29) in the first half and just 15.4 percent (2-for-13) from 3-point range.
- After the break, the Eagles picked things up offensively with 46.2 (12-for-26) shooting, including making 5-of-14 from 3-point range (35.7 percent). Negus finished the game with 19 points, while Seefeld added 16.
THE OPPOSITION
- The Eagles did a tremendous job on the reigning NACC Player of the Year, Matthew Kirmse.
Jacob Miller drew Kirmse for most of the afternoon and held him three points in the first half and 11 points for the game.
- It was Ballard who did most of the damage for the Raiders, pouring in 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles will remain at home with another NACC contest Wednesday night. Edgewood College will host Lakeland for a 7 p.m. start.
