Eagles roll to wins over Raiders, Falcons in first home action of 2019

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Women's Tennis team played at home for the first time during the 2019-20 season Saturday and put on an impressive showing in the process. The Eagles started the day with their first NACC match of the season, and the defending league champs showed why they are the favorites for the crown once again with an 8-1 win over MSOE. Edgewood College then concluded the day with a 9-0 non-conference over UW-River Falls.

EAGLES 8, MSOE 1
- It started in doubles play where the Eagles dropped a total of four points in sweeping the three matches. The most lopsided win came at No. 3 doubles as Alyssa Carew and Kinsey Kessel posted an 8-0 victory.

- Kai Heinmean and Alicia Picard gained an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, while the No. 1 pairing of sisters Sydney Verbauwhede and Ally Verbauwhede gained an 8-3 victory.

- In singles play the Eagles won five-of-six matches to move to 1-0 in the NACC. Carew netted a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Heineman gained a 6-3, 7-5 win in the No. 3 singles bout.

- Ally Verbauwhede, Picard, and Lydia Dean gained wins in the No. 4 through 6 singles spots for the Eagles as well. Verbauwhede won 6-2, 6-1, Picard 6-2, 6-0, and Dean 6-0, 6-2.

EAGLES 9, UW-RIVER FALLS 0
- As good as the Eagles were in the morning against the Raiders, they were even better in the afternoon against the Falcons. Edgewood College won all nine matches, again beginning with a sweep in doubles play. The Verbauwhede sisters won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, while the Eagles changed up the pairings at No. 2 and 3 doubles. At No. 2, Heineman partnered with Carew for an 8-1 win, while Kessel and Picard rolled to an 8-2 victory.

- Sydney Verbauwhede won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles with Heineman posting the same score in her No. 2 singles victory. Carew added a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles as both her and Heineman remained perfect in singles play through five matches this season.

- Picard rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win and Ally Verbauwhede had the most dominant win of the day, gaining a 6-0, 6-0 No. 5 singles win. Dean won 6-0 in her first set before completing the victory 6-3 in set two.
