DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Edgewood College men's soccer team showed speed, persistence, and stamina when it mattered the most in a thrilling overtime victory over Defiance College on Sunday. The 2-1 victory marks the first win of the season for the Eagles. Newcomer Brian Root knocked in the game-winning goal, his first as an Eagle, in the 99th minute on a rainy afternoon in Defiance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (1-1) showed aggressive offense in the first few minutes of the contest, outshooting Defiance College (0-2) 4-2 in the first 13 minutes. Eventually, Defiance College took the early lead in the 14th minute of action, as Adam Ordel found the back of the net.
- The Yellow Jacket lead wouldn't last long, as Edwin Aguirre scored in the 27th minute, assisted by William Lemkuil.
- The contest would remain knotted up at 1 for the entirety of the second half, with the Eagles and Yellow Jackets combining for 34 shots in the first and second half, 17 apiece.
- The Eagles took advantage of a Defiance red card at the start of overtime and used their man-up advantage to score the game winner. Sophomore Root took advantage of a quick turn-around from the Eagles defense. With just under two minutes remaining in the contest, the sophomore found his way past the Yellow Jacket line of defense, and expertly placed the ball in the back of the net for his first goal as an Eagle.
- Edgewood College outshot Defiance College 19-18, and were led by Zander Hartberg's game-high six shots.
- Junior goalkeeper Brendon Martin posted six saves for the Eagles.
