GREEN BAY, Wis. – With a number of new and returning faces the Eagles posted a dominant 8-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point and ended the first day of the 2019-20 season with a 7-2 win over St. Norbert College. Two newcomers picked up multiple wins as the Eagles finished 2-0 on the day.
Edgewood College 8, UW-Stevens Point 1
- Edgewood College got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Freshman Ally Verbauwhede and Kinsey Kessel earned their first collegiate wins with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles while Kai Heineman and Alicia Picard battled to a 8-7 (3) victory in the No. 2 doubles slot.
- The Eagles dominated in singles play against the Pointers, as Ally Verbauwhede (6-1, 6-0) and Kinsey Kessel (6-1, 1-6, 10-4) earned their first singles victories as Eagles in the No. 3 and No. 6 slots respectively.
- At No. 2 singles Sydney Verbauwhede picked up a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory, while Picard also had a strong showing, winning 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles slot.
Edgewood College 7, St. Norbert College 2
- In the nightcap, the Eagles continued to show strength, taking down St. Norbert College 7-2.
- The Eagles finished 2-1 in doubles matches, while surrendering just one singles match to the Green Knights.
- In the No. 3 doubles slot, partners Picard and Kessel picked up a convincing 8-1 victory, while Alyssa Carew and Heineman earned the second doubles win (8-3) at No. 2 doubles.
- Heineman defeated St. Norbert's Hannah Swajenen at No. 2 singles with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory.
- Three Eagles (Heineman, Picard, and Kessel) remained undefeated on the day, finishing up 4-0 on the court.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College women's tennis opens their season with back to back wins for the first time since the 2011-12 season. In 2011 the Eagles started their season with a 2-0 record, defeating Marian University 8-1 and Dominican University 5-4.
- Three Eagles (Heineman, Picard, and Kessel) remained undefeated on the day, finishing up 4-0 on the court.
- Newcomers Kinsey Kessel and Ally Verbauwhede proved they have what it takes, as Kessel went undefeated, and A. Verbauwhede finished 3-1 on the day.
