Rookie pitchers step up on Eagles Senior Day Sweep over Sabercats

VERONA, Wis. – It was a good day at The Chuck for the Edgewood Baseball program. The Eagles behind the arms of two freshmen pitchers gained a sweep over Maranatha Baptist University on Senior Day. Following the two twins (5-0, 5-1), the Eagles celebrated the eight seniors and their careers with the program. Branden Cohn tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener, while Ezra Smith threw a one-hitter in game two.

EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 5, MARANATHA BAPTIST 0 (GAME ONE)
- The Eagles received a complete-game shutout from Cohn in game one as the southpaw finished the seven-inning contest with nine strikeouts. He scattered six hits and walked just one in his first career victory.

- Edgewood College got on the board with three runs in the third, all coming with two outs. Ryan Fields, one of eight seniors celebrated on Friday, roped a two-run triple to right field, scoring seniors Paul Cappetta and Bryan Sternig. Fields would then score on an RBI single by another senior, Dane Lamont.

- The Eagles again did some damage with two outs in the fourth inning and again the runs were produced by seniors. Sternig tripled in senior Casey Willis, while Cappetta singled in Sternig to make the score 5-0.

- Cappetta had three hits to pace the Eagles offense with Sternig going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Kamdan Bloom added a pair of hits for Edgewood College.

EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 5, MARANATHA BAPTIST 1 (GAME TWO)
- In game two it was the right arm of Smith who provided a strong start for the Eagles. Smith gave up just one hit and one run in his first collegiate win. The right-hander struck out five and issued a pair of walks.

- Seniors Ryan Cassady and Sternig hit back-to-back sacrifice flies in the second inning to put the Eagles up 2-0. With the score 2-1 in after three, the Eagles scored once each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames for the 5-1 victory.

- The final three runs were scored by seniors, the first of those coming off an RBI double by Fields in the fourth, plating Sternig. Max Orput, who finished with three hits in game two, singled in Lamont in the fifth, while Kyle Semrad, who also tallied three hits, singled in Fields in the sixth.

- Fields added two hits for the Eagles as he Sternig and Lamont all doubled in the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The 2019 Edgewood College Senior Class which was celebrated Friday consists of: Sternig, Cassady, Fields, Willis, Lamont, Jake Sawinski, Mason Maziarka, and Cappetta.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will play at Aurora in a NACC doubleheader Sunday. The games will be played at Wheaton College's home field, Lee Pfund Stadium in Carol Stream, Ill. and will start at noon.
