Cougars hang on to sweep Eagles in River Forest

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Despite holding a 2-0 lead through six innings in the second game of the NACC doubleheader, the Edgewood College Softball team dropped two at Concordia Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars took the first contest 4-1 and the second game 4-2 in extra innings.

CONCORDIA CHICAGO 4, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 2 (GAME TWO)
- The Edgewood College Softball team (6-16, 0-10 NACC) displayed strong hitting in the second game of the afternoon, putting up nine hits overall.

- Edgewood College built a 2-0 lead after three innings of play. The Eagles scored in the first inning, as Laurissa Belott came across the plate after an error by the Cougars. Timely hitting from Sabrina Maicke scored the second run for the Eagles in the top of the third inning. Maicke's double to left field scored Andi Salm from second.

- Concordia Chicago (14-8, 6-4 NACC) tied the game at 2-2 when Shania Phillips and Nia DeGeorge scored on a single through the right side off the bat of Marita Van Dyke.

- The game winner for the Cougars came in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs. Phillips managed a walk-off two run home run to center field to complete the sweep for the Cougars.

- Belott, Maicke, and Jenna Johnson all finished game two with two hits each, while Maicke also added an RBI.

- Maddy Coppens took the loss, tossing 3.2 innings and striking out three. Freshman Emily Bloomfield picked up four innings of solid work for the Eagles, striking out one, and only allowing five hits.  

CONCORDIA CHICAGO 4, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 1 (GAME ONE)
- The Cougars got things going in the bottom of the second inning as a single from Getz scored two.

- The Eagles responded quickly, as an RBI single to center field off the bat of Delleman scored Belott from third.

- The Edgewood College defense kept the Cougars from scoring through the third and fourth frames and forced the Cougars to strand three baserunners.

- Concordia Chicago added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Abbey Sloan came across the plate after as a result of a fielder's choice and fielding miscue from the Eagles.

- Eagle catcher Sabrina Luedtke played a big part in minimizing the Cougars damage, as she successfully threw out two Cougars on steal attempts.

- Van Dyke earned her sixth win of the season, going the distance for the Cougars. Van Dyke successfully struck out six in the first game of the afternoon.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will return home to face off against Rockford University on Wednesday. Doubleheader action will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Ceniti Park in Verona, Wis.
