EUREKA, Ill. – The Edgewood College Baseball team wanted to make sure
Jake Sawinski's efforts didn't go to waste in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at Eureka College Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles, trailing 2-0 heading into the seventh and final inning, rallied for four runs for a 4-2 victory. Eureka would win the second contest, 6-3, as the Eagles were forced to settle for a split.
EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4, EUREKA 2
- Sawinski was brilliant on the mound for the Eagles in game one. The senior right-hander allowed just four hits and walked only one over seven strong where he surrendered just two runs. He needed just 83 pitches to navigate through seven innings in picking up his first win of the season.
- The Eagles (6-15) made sure Sawinski was rewarded with a win with a four-run rally in the seventh.
Joseph Kalafut started the inning with a walk, followed by
Kyle Semrad reaching on an error and
Paul Cappetta reaching via a walk setting up Edgewood College with bases loaded and nobody out. Two strikeouts put the Eagles down to their final out but
Adam Cairo and
Bryan Sternig came up with back-to-back two-run doubles to give them a 4-2 lead.
- Sawinski went back out for the seventh and made quick work of the Red Devils in the seventh, retiring two via groundout and one via strikeout in finishing off the complete-game effort.
- The Eagles finished the game with just four hits, two of those coming from Cairo. Two of the four came when it mattered most, the doubles from Cairo and Sternig in the seventh.
EUREKA 6, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3
- Eureka used a four-run second in game two in salvaging a split with Edgewood College. The Eagles scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, but the Red Devils added runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth frames for the 6-3 final.
- Cairo stayed hot at the dish for the Eagles in game two, picking up three more hits to finish with five for the day. The Eagles outhit Eureke, 8-5, in game two.

Ryan Fields was the pitcher of record for the Eagles, working four innings.
Richie Coughlin threw 1.1 frames, while
Will Mossa got the final two outs for Edgewood College.
