Eagles soar past Messiah, clipped by Wooster Tuesday

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Edgewood College Women's Tennis team played two more matches Tuesday on its spring trip to South Carolina. The Eagles opened the day with a convincing 8-1 win over Messiah College for their third-straight win. The winning streak would come to an end in the nightcap, as they were edged by the College of Wooster, 5-4.

EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8, MESSIAH 1
- The Eagles (14-4) opened the day with a strong showing against the Falcons. It started with a sweep in doubles play where Edgewood College dropped a total of six points across three matches.

- The No. 1 duo of Sydney Verbauwhede and Alyssa Carew won 8-3 with the No. 2 pairing of Kai Heineman and Alicia Picard posting an 8-1 victory. Completing the doubles sweep was the No. 3 tandem of Marissa Wilson and Haley Brooks, who won 8-2.

- In singles play, Edgewood College would add victories in five-of-six matches to complete the 8-1 victory. It started at No. 1 singles with Verbauwhede posting a straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1 win. Carew followed suit at No. 2 singles, netting a 6-3, 6-1 win.

- Jaclyn Swift needed a third-set tiebreak for her exciting win at No. 4 singles. Swift won the opening set 6-2 before falling 3-6 in set number two. She won the tiebreaker 10-5 to complete her win. Brooks rolled 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Abbie Groppe impressed in the No. 6 singles spot, winning 6-2, 6-1.

WOOSTER 5, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4
- The Eagles started ahead against the Fighting Scots, taking two of three in doubles play. Picard and Heineman finished the day 2-0 in their doubles matches, winning 8-6 at the No. 2 spot. Wilson and Swift netted an 8-4 win from the No. 3 doubles position.

- Wooster battled back in singles play, taking four-of-six from the Eagles. Heineman and Picard both finished off perfect days by winning at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively.

- Heineman was pushed to the limit in the opening set, ultimately winning 7-6 (7-5), before completing the victory with a 6-2 set two win. Picard had little trouble in her No. 4 singles match, netting a 6-0, 6-1 win.

- Edgewood College will close its spring trip tomorrow with a match against Allegheny College at 8:30 a.m. eastern.
