FORT MYERS, Fla. – The combination of walks in game one and errors in game two proved costly for the Edgewood College Baseball team Monday afternoon in Florida. The Eagles dropped a pair of games as a result, the opener, 23-7, against Babson College, and game two by a 19-6 count versus Southern Vermont.
BABSON 23, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 7
- First inning woes again put the Eagles in an early hole against the Beavers. After scoring a run in the top of the first, Edgewood College saw Babson plate eight runs in the bottom half. Babson would go on to add five runs in each the third and fourth innings.
- The Eagles staff issued 20 free passes, walking 18 batters and hitting a pair, in the opening game setback. Babson's offense took advantage and collected 18 hits en route to the 23 runs.
- One positive for the Eagles was they had one of their best offensive games of the young season, totaling 13 hits and scoring seven runs. Freshmen
Joseph Kalafut led the way with three hits, while seniors
Bryan Sternig,
Ryan Fields, and
Casey Willis all added two. All four of those players doubled in the contest.
SOUTHERN VERMONT 19, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 6
- Game two saw the Eagles commit seven errors as 11 of the Mountaineers 19 runs scored were unearned. Two of those mishaps came in the opening inning as Southern Vermont built a 3-1 lead after one.
- The Mountaineers would plate runs in all but one inning at the plate, including six in the fifth inning, which broke the game open. Edgewood College had its big inning in its last at bat, plating four in the top of the ninth.
- Again, the offense was a positive for the Eagles as they recorded another double-digit hit attack with 10.
Ryan Cassady went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the way. Kalafut added two hits for Edgewood College.
- The Eagles roped five doubles and added a triple in game two.
Trey Hunt, Cassady, Kalafut,
Max Orput, and
Bryan Niznik all doubled, while Fields added a triple.
