FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College Baseball team opened its 2019 season by battling a 2018 NCAA Tournament team in Bethel University. The Eagles pushed the Royals to the limit, especially in game two, but ultimately were swept to open the 2019 campaign. The Royals took the opener, 6-0, before rallying for a 3-2 win in game two.
GAME TWO – BETHEL 3, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 2
- Game two was decided in the top of the sixth inning when Bethel, trailing 2-1 entering the frame, struck for two runs. With two outs and the game tied at two, Nick Wibben of the Royals delivered the go-ahead single.
- Edgewood College built its lead by scoring once each in the bottom of the second and third frames.
Ryan Cassady provided the first run-scoring single of the season for the Eagles in the second inning, plating
Joseph Kalafut.
- Bethel would tie things up at 1-1 in the top of the third, but the Eagles responded in the bottom half.
Ryan Fields, who also got the start on the mound for Edgewood College, helped his own cause with an RBI triple, plating
Trey Hunt.
- Edgewood College ended the game with just two hits, the run-scoring hits from Fields and Cassady. Fields delivered a good outing on the mound, throwing 5.2 innings and surrendering three earned runs. He struck out three compared to just one walk.
Connor Schatzberg worked a scoreless 1.1 innings for the Eagles as well.
- Bethel received three hitless relief innings from Brad Leahy, as he picked up the win.
GAME ONE – BETHEL 6, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 0
- The Eagles were unable to solve Connor Malcolm in the 2019 opener as the Royals starter went the distance. Malcolm scattered three hits and struck out five, while hitting one batter, in the complete game effort.

Will Mossa turned in a solid outing of his own for Edgewood College, throwing 4.1 innings and giving up a pair of runs.
Branden Cohn and
Kyle Semrad turned in scoreless relief appearances in their Eagles debuts.
- Bethel scored once each in the third and fifth frames before opening the game up with a four-run sixth. Mitch Butvilas delivered a pair of hits and drove in three for the Royals. Fields, Kalafut, and
Max Orput collected hits for Edgewood College.
