MILWAUKEE, WIS. - In the final regular season matchup that featured eight tie scores and 19 lead changes, the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team fell to Wisconsin Lutheran College 94-81. The Eagles offense came out strong, as McClain Steffens recorded a career-high 27 points, nearly double his previous career-high. Despite the loss, Edgewood College claimed the sixth spot in the NACC Tournament after having the best head-to-head mark in a tiebreaker situation against Wisconsin Lutheran, Lakeland, and Benedictine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (10-15, 10-10 NACC) and Wisconsin Lutheran (12-13, 10-10 NACC) both came out of the gate shooting well, both teams going into the locker room with a 57.58 shooting percentage (19-for-33). The Eagles were quite effective from both beyond the arc (8-for-14) and from short range (34 points) in the first half.
- After a back and forth affair, in which Edgewood College found its biggest lead of five with just 12 seconds remaining, both teams were determined to make their mark in the second period.
- With just under seven minutes remaining in the second half, Edgewood College and Wisconsin Lutheran battled things out from 3-point range. McClain Steffens got things going with a three pointer to give the Eagles just a one point lead (71-68). The Warriors responded quickly, as Randy Johnson Jr. sparked the Wisconsin Lutheran scoring run from long distance with 5:38 left on the clock.
- Through the end of the contest, Wisconsin Lutheran gained the edge with a 24-10 run, narrowly beating out the Eagles strong shooting.
- Senior Steffens was dominant for the Eagles with a career-best 27 points. Jake Negus (17 points) and Ben Seefeld (12 points) also scored in double figures, while Sy Staver came away with a team-best five assists and eight rebounds.
THE OPPOSITION
- Collin Kennedy led the Warriors with 23 points and added seven rebounds, while Andrew Bruggink (18 points) and Colin Biesterfeld (15 points) also scored in double-figures. Matty Farner pulled down seven rebounds for Wisconsin Lutheran, while Biesterfeld distributed four assists on the afternoon.
UP NEXT
- Edgewood College, the sixth-seed for the NACC Tournament, will travel to Aurora on Wednesday night to face third-seeded Aurora University in a first round game. The winner will advance to the semifinals which will be hosted at MSOE on Saturday.
