RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Despite a strong double-double performance from Alyssa Lemirande, and 11 rebounds from Lexi Walter, a late fourth period surge from the Edgewood College Women's Basketball team wasn't enough to hold off Dominican University. The Eagles fell 48-44 on Monday night in the back and forth defensive battle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first period got off to slow start, but the Edgewood College (14-9, 11-7 NACC) sophomore Lemirande got the scoring going with a layup two minutes into the contest. Dominican University headed into the second period with the lead (12-6), scoring six of 12 points in the final three minutes of the period.
- The Eagles headed into the locker room with a four-point deficit (20-16), after a truly defensive first half. Both teams were shooting under 30 percent, and each owned nine turnovers. The block game was strong from Dominican University (9), although the Eagles owned six of their own.
- With just seconds remaining in the third period Lemirande made her 10th and 11th points of the contest from the charity stripe, making it a 34-34 tie game going into the final period.
- Just under four minutes remaining in the fourth period, two free throws from Abby Shane gave the Eagles their first lead of the quarter. The Eagles held a two-point lead (44-42) with 3:23 remaining on the clock, but a series of turnovers gave the Stars the edge they needed to complete the sweep.
- Dominican University kept the Eagles quiet from outside the arc, only allowing 1-of-6 shots to drop. The Stars made 3-of-14 from 3-point range.
- Overall, the Eagles out-rebounded the Stars (43-38), but that wasn't enough, as Dominican came away with 13 blocks to the Eagles 7 blocks.
- Lemirande came away with her second career double-double, leading the Eagles in both points (15) and rebounds (12). Walter wasn't far behind, putting up eight points and pulling down 11 boards.
THE OPPOSITION
- The Stars shot 18-for-59 (30.5 percent) from the floor, but were held to just 3-for-13 (23.1 percent) from deep.
- Timiya Ray finished with a 12 point, 19 rebound double-double, while Amari Stafford scored a team-best 13 points on the night. Stephanee Huggans also finished in double figures for the Stars (10 points), and going 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
