DE PERE, Wis. - Avery Lyons made two free throws with four seconds remaining to help the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team pick up a 74-72 win over UW-Superior at the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament Monday evening. Lyons finished with a game-high 21 points for the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles (3-7) staged a second-half comeback on Monday as they trailed by seven points heading into the break. Edgewood College was down 13 at one point in the first half before cutting the Yellowjackets lead to seven by halftime.
- With the score 55-48 in favor of UW-Superior (6-6) with 11:16 left in the game, Edgewood College went on an 11-0 run to take their first lead early in the opening half.
Max Fernholz, who scored a career-best nine points, made two 3-point baskets during the run, while
Matthew Myers started the 11-0 stretch with a 3-point make of his own.
- The Yellowjackets quickly answered with a 6-0 run of their own and the two teams went back-and-forth until a 7-0 Eagles run, which began with 3:26 left on the clock, pushed the Edgewood College lead to 72-64 with 1:02 left to play.
- UW-Superior would score the next eight points, helped by a few miscues at the line for Edgewood College, but Lyons stepped up with four seconds left and the game tied at 72. The sophomore guard buried two free throws and a last second chance by UW-Superior was off the mark, allowing the Eagles to escape with the 74-72 win.
- Lyons finished with 21 points to wrap up an outstanding two days at the tournament. Entering with zero career 20-point games, Lyons scored 20-plus in each contest. He added a team-best five assists Monday.
- Three other Eagles finished in double figures with
Ben Seefeld scoring 14,
Ryan Buss adding 12, and Myers chipping in with 11 on 4-of-6 shooting. The Eagles shot the ball well again Monday, connecting on 49.1 percent (27-for-55) from the floor and 50 percent (8-for-16) from 3-point range.
THE OPPOSITION
