ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – Freshman McKenna Reichling led the Edgewood College offense in double digits as the Eagles opened the 2019-20 season with a 71-52 win over Crown College. In the victory 12 different Eagles scored and 43 of 71 points came from the bench, proving lots of depth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Edgewood College (1-0) offense was strong out of the gate, shooting 53 percent from the floor in the first quarter, and 42 percent overall. Reichling came off the bench and impressed in her collegiate debut with 11 points through just nine minutes. The freshman was perfect from the charity stripe (5-of-5) and went 3-of-5 from the floor. Parker Fetherston added a career best nine points and two steals in the victory.
- Newcomer Bria Lemirande made her mark in an Eagles uniform, pulling down a team high 10 rebounds, dishing out five assists, and forcing three steals.
- The Eagles and Storm went back-and-forth in the opening period, with Edgewood College owning a five point lead on five occasions. The Eagles would extend their lead to 10 with 0:49 remaining in the period after Reichling drained two free throws. Edgewood College would take a 17 point lead (43-26) into the break, off six straight points.
- Crown came out of the half strong, outscoring the Eagles 14-12 in the third period. Despite a strong effort from the Storm, Fetherston scored four in the period and helped the Eagles maintain a 15 point lead heading into the final period.
- The Eagles started the fourth period with an 11 point run, giving them a 26 point lead, their biggest of the night. The impressive offensive effort was highlighted by a 3-pointer from Emma Klein, her second of the night.
- In the end, the Eagles finished the night with a 19 point lead, holding the Storm to just 32 percent shooting and 24 percent from beyond the arc.
THE OPPOSITION
- Dominique Urbina led Crown College with 13 points and three steals. Damonyka Roberts, Patricia Gibson, and Rose Crowns each pulled down eight rebounds for the Storm, while Stevey De La Ossa and Patricia Gibson both finished with three assists on the night.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This marks the third-straight season Edgewood College has won its season-opener. Last year, the Eagles put up 78 points in a 78-72 season-opening win over Lake Forest College.
