Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles comeback effort falls just short in wild finish against Rams

MADISON – The Edgewood College Women's Basketball team stormed back in the fourth quarter and set up a wild finish against North Central University Thursday evening at the Edgedome. The Eagles comeback, which was sparked by Kelly Carpenter, ultimately fell just short, as the visiting Rams held on for a 65-64 non-conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- When Carpenter entered the game for the first time with 7:43 to play in the fourth quarter, the Eagles (6-5) trailed 56-45. All the sophomore did was score eight points and pull down seven rebounds in the quarter, helping Edgewood College storm back.

- Carpenter ignited a 13-2 run over the next 3:56, scoring six points over that stretch. Abby Shane added a 3-point make and Carpenter finished off the run with a jumper to tie the score at 58-58. The Rams (7-4) would respond, scoring the next four points, all from Emily Digiorgio, resulting in a 62-58 score with 1:19 left.

- The Eagles had another un in them as Alyssa Lemirande made a pair of free throws with 1:05 to go, making the score 62-60. A made free throw by the Rams made it 63-60 with 24 seconds left and another made shot from the charity stripe 10 seconds later made the score 64-60.

- Edgewood College had one last run in them as Shane buried a 3-pointer with five seconds left. The Rams made one free throw with 0.7 seconds left but Edgewood College had another chance, calling a timeout to advance the ball to the frontcourt. The Eagles were fouled on a 3-point attempt, but made just one free throw, resulting in the 65-64 final.

- The first three quarters put the Eagles in an 11-point hole, including a disappointing second quarter where the Rams outscored them, 20-10. Edgewood College trailed 38-26 at halftime despite forcing 15 Rams turnovers. Where North Central made the Eagles pay was on the boards, outrebounding Edgewood College 55-33 in the contest.

- The Rams first half 3-point shooting also played a big role in the outcome as they made 8-of-17 in the first 20 minutes. After halftime, North Central struggled from deep, going 0-for-12. They did however make enough free throws in the second half (13-for-17) to hold on for the win.

A LOOK AT THE BOX SCORE
- Shane paced the Eagles with 16 points, connecting on 4-of-11 from deep. As a team, Edgewood College made just 6-of-23 from deep and 24-of-66 from the floor (36.4 percent).

- Carpenter led the Eagles with seven rebounds, three of those on the offensive glass.

- Brooke Lonigro was one of three Eagles to finish with four or more assists, leading all players with five. Shane and Lemirande each tallied four.

- Edgewood College forced twice as many turnovers as it committed on Thursday, winning that battle, 26-13.

THE OPPOSITION
- The Rams had four players finish in double figures and two post double-doubles. Naomi Hagstrom led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Alice Cato came off the bench to score 11 points and pull down 12 boards, seven of those on the offensive glass.

- Betty Rand added 15 points, while Haleigh Filer scored 12 for North Central.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will have a quick turnaround with a NACC road game at MSOE Saturday afternoon. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m. in Milwaukee.
