MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Benedictine University on Saturday afternoon. Despite taking a season-high 22 shots against Benedictine, the Eagles were unable to find the back of the net at Breese Stevens Field.
Edgewood College (0-8-1, 0-4 NACC) and Benedictine University (5-6, 2-2 NACC) battled back and forth through a match that remained deadlocked at 0-0 until the 86th minute of the contest. The Eagles came to play in their third home game of the season, taking a total of 12 shots in the first half and maintaining pressure with 10 shots in the second half.
Benedictine finally broke through with four minutes remaining in the contest, as Eve Meintz made a run down the left side of the field and found the back of the net from 10 feet out. The freshman's game winning goal also goes down as her first ever collegiate goal.
Mari Hubanks led the offense with eight shots in the game. The senior put together a picture perfect run with 10 minutes remaining the in the first half. Hubanks turned down the right side of the field and beat out the Benedictine defender to make a cross to Mady Warda who was just barely denied a shot by an oncoming Benedictine defender.
Freshman Aubrey Tarmann recorded a career-high six shots in the contest. Sophomore goalkeeper Grace Wildeboer was instrumental in the contest, totaling seven saves. She now has 67 saves on the season, good for second in the NACC behind 136 recorded by Allison Weick of Alverno.
The Eagles will continue to look for their first win of the season when they face Lakeland University on Wednesday, October 3 at Breese Stevens Field. Kickoff will begin at 7:00 p.m.
