MONTGOMERY, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team continued conference play on Saturday night with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Aurora University. The low scoring contest marks the third contest of the season in which the Eagles only scored one goal. Goalkeepers on both sides kept offensive hopes alive, with three of eight total saves were made in overtime.
Through the first 70 minutes of competition neither team was able to put the ball away. Edgewood College (5-3-1, 0-1-1 NACC) struck first, as Victor Lombardino headed the ball past the Aurora goalie. In the 71st minute Jorge Catellanos drilled a shot off the crossbar, which was recovered by Zander Hartberg, and Garrett Lee found Lombardino to his right and made the perfect pass.
Lombardino's second goal of the season gave Edgewood College the lead, but Aurora (2-6-1, 1-0-1 NACC) answered back seven minutes later. Collin Foreman netted the first and only goal for the Spartans in from the top right corner of the box in the 78th minute. The Spartans would continue to attack the goal, taking three more shots in the final minutes of the second half, but two saves from Carson Hughes would send the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period the Eagles were outshot by the Spartans 3-1, as Carson Hughes recorded his fifth save to keep the Eagles in the game. In the final and second overtime period the Eagles and Spartans both took one shot, each on goal. Goalkeepers Carson Hughes and Edward St. Martin made spectacular saves in the final four minutes of the contest.
Edgewood College was outshot 15-6 in the contest, and freshman Carson Hughes recorded a career-high six saves in his first full game in goal for the Eagles. Interestingly, this is the first contest to end in a draw since a 0-0 tie to Lawrence University in 2014.
Edgewood College return home to host Concordia Wisconsin on Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field. Kickoff begins at 7:00 p.m.
