MADISON, Wis. – After battling through 78 minutes of scoreless competition on a muggy Wednesday night, Edgewood College women's soccer was unable to hold off the aggressive UW-Stevens Point offense. The Eagles struggled to generate many scoring opportunities, falling to UW-Stevens Point 1-0 at Breese Stevens Field. The Eagles slipped to 0-3-1 on the season, despite a strong defensive effort.
Both teams got off to a slow start, with neither side registering a shot for the first 6 minutes of the half. In the 7th minute, Edgewood College (0-3-1) junior Olivia De Castro cut off a UW-Stevens Point (4-0-1) pass and fed the ball to Mady Warda. The senior beat out a Pointers defender down the left side of the field, but was denied a goal when her shot was blocked by a defender.
The Pointers would take a total of 23 shots before breaking through in the 79th minute of the game. Kortnee Hess scored the only goal of the evening, after a shot from teammate Gracie Wendels bounced off the crossbar and created a scramble in front of the goal. From just five yards out, Hess netted the ball on a sliding effort.
Overall, the Pointers outshot the Eagles 26-1. Eagle goalkeeper Grace Wildeboer recorded an impressive 11 saves, just one shy of the 12 saves she recorded in the final game of the 2017 season.
Edgewood College will be back in action on Saturday at Lake Forest College. The Eagles will take on the Foresters in a 1:00 p.m. match.
