Hubanks leads the way in season opening draw

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Edgewood College women's soccer team kicked off the 2018 season with a thrilling 1-1 tie with Grinnell College. Newcomer Mari Hubanks scored the Eagles only goal of the game in the 52nd minute to tie up the match.

Grinnell College (0-0-1) struck first, with a goal from Regan Kasprak in the 32nd minute of the contest. In the 37th minute, junior Cassidy Johnson took her shot against Pioneer goalie Elizabeth Hunt. Johnson was unable to find the back of the net, as Hunt recorded the save. The Edgewood College (0-0-1) women's soccer team went into halftime hoping to find an offensive spark.

Only three minutes into the second half, newcomer Mari Hubanks recorded her first shot as an Eagle. Although Hubanks's first shot was denied by Hunt, she scored her first Eagle goal just four minutes later off an assist from Madelyn Peach. The 52nd minute was exciting, as Hubanks's goal came seconds after a shot from Mady Warda was blocked. Hubanks would go on to take three more shots in the contest, recording a total of five shots.

Within the last four minutes of regulation, the Grinnell College women's soccer team took three shots, two on goal both saved by Grace Wildeboer to force the game into overtime. Both the Eagles and the Pioneers showed no signs to letting up, as both teams recorded shots in the first overtime period. At the end of double overtime neither team was able record a goal.

Overall, the Pioneers outshot the Eagles 22-12. Edgewood College only recorded three shots in the first half, but recorded six shots in the second half. Senior Mady Warda also contributed with three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper, Grace Wildeboer recorded an impressive seven saves on the day.

Edgewood College's next game will be a non-conference home game against St. Norbert College on Sunday, September 2. The match will begin at 1:00 pm at Breese Stevens Field.
