VERONA, Wis. – Edgewood College had leads in both ends of the doubleheader against Aurora University, but the Eagles couldn't hold in a pair of losses. The Spartans claimed victory by scores of 5-3 in 10 innings and game one, and 6-3 in game two.
Aurora University (22-12, 9-7 NACC) spoiled a great outing by Eagles starting pitcher Steve Gavin. Gavin pitched into the 10th inning, before the Spartans touched him for three runs. Gavin struck out five batters and allowed four earned runs. The Spartans led 1-0 when Edgewood College (7-23, 4-10 NACC) broke through in the seventh inning. Josh Ottum singled to score Nik Visone from second with two outs. After a Bryan Sternig double moved Ottum to second, he scored the go-ahead run on a Spartan wild pitch.
Aurora posted a run in the eighth inning to tie the game at 2-2 and send it to extra innings. In the 10th, the Spartans struck for three runs. Edgewood College scored once in the bottom of the inning on Ryan Fields single and an outfield error on the Spartans. But Aurora reliever Nicholas Mathey struck out the Eagles' final hitter to win the game.
Alex Fowler went 3-for-4 in the game, while Fields was 2-for-4. Ottum also had two hits in three at-bats. Sternig and Callen Gavic each had a double.
In game two, Edgewood College jumped on top with three runs in the first. Garrett Bogucki laid down a sacrifice bunt, that Aurora threw wild down the first base line, allowing Fields and Fowler to score. Two batters later Sternig doubled to score Bogucki from second. Unfortunately, Aurora would score three times in second and another run in the third to take the lead for good.
The Eagles had seven hits in the game, highlighted by triples from Ottum and Casey Willis. Fowler singled in the first inning to reach base safely in his 30th straight game, just one short of the school record held jointly by Zack Creekmore and Pat Manning. Logan Pitts took the loss for the Eagles pitching six innings while striking out six batters. Alex Meister held the Spartans scoreless for the final three innings, striking out two.
Edgewood College will host UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday night at Stampfl Field in Verona for Veterans Appreciation Night.
