MADISON, Wis. – Freshman Laurissa Belott hit safely in her 15th and 16th games, respectively, in a pair of losses to the undefeated Sabres, 6-1 and 8-6, on Monday afternoon. Opportunities fell by the way side for the Edgewood College softball team after stranding five runners combined in final two innings of game one and giving up a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning of game two against Marian.
Belott extended her hit streak to 15 games, but was part of an offense that was held to just five hits in game one loss, 6-1, to Marian (14-6, 6-0 NACC). The Eagle bats couldn't capitalize when needed and stranded five runners combined over the last two innings.
Grace Delleman doubled home Amanda Meister in the fourth inning for the Eagles (8-8, 0-2 NACC) only run. Trailing Marian 2-1, the Eagle offense later squandered a key opportunity after loading the bases with one out in the sixth. Two straight pop ups ended their best offensive opportunity of the day. In the seventh inning the Eagles put two in scoring position with one out, but a strike out and ground out concluded their sixth straight defeat to Marian.
Belott kept her streak alive with a single in her third at-bat. Her 15-game hit streak is tied for the fifth-longest in team history and longest since Jessica Spitzer had 16 in 2010.
The Sabres put the game away with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to notch the final margin of 6-1. Ally Fox and Gianna Esposito each added two hits apiece for the NACC-leading Sabres. Starting pitcher Paige Rauhut (8-2), who leads the NACC with eight wins, allowed one earned run while striking out six over seven innings.
Shannon Whitmus (3-4) finished with one double and tossed six innings in defeat. She gave up five earned runs and struck out a season-high six batters.
The offense woke up in game two and sprinted out to a 5-0 lead through the first three innings. An RBI single by Amanda Meister and 2-run double by Jordan Anderson sparked a 3-run first and put the Eagles in control early. The offense finished with nine hits and carried their 5-0 lead into the fifth inning.
That's when the Sabre offense did its damage, but not without a little help from the Eagles. The Sabres scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth on just two hits, scoring four of their runs on three bases loaded walks and a wild pitch.
Sabrina Luedtke scored on a Sabre wild pitch in the top of the sixth, but the home team countered with an RBI single in the bottom half to conclude the scoring.
Belott finished with two hits, including a double, out of the leadoff spot and Grace Delleman also posted two hits and two runs scored.
Eagle starter Maddy Coppens, who held the Sabres scoreless over the first four innings, was pulled before registering an out in the fifth after allowed five runs (four earned), and three hits. She finished with a career-high four strikeouts. Reliever Amanda Meister (2-4) took the loss after giving up two unearned runs on one hit in one inning of work.
Rauhut, who started and got the win in game one, threw the last two innings for the Sabres while middle reliever Schuttenhelm earned the victory after tossing four innings and allowing two runs (one earned). Offensively, seven Sabres each registered one hit, including Strainis with a team-high two RBIs.
The Eagles will look to put an end to their 4-game skid when they host Lakeland in their home opening doubleheader at Ceniti Park this Saturday, April 7 at noon.
