PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – On Monday afternoon, the Edgewood College baseball team couldn't get its offense on track until the late innings, allowing UW-Platteville to emerge with a 10-6 victory at chilly Kendall Murray Field. The Eagles scored six runs over the final three innings but couldn't make up the deficit.
UW-Platteville (6-10) broke the game open with a four-run, third inning off Eagle starter Connor Schatzberg. The Pioneers added five more runs in the fifth inning, before Nick Cheaney got the Eagles their first hit with a double in the sixth.
Edgewood College (3-11) finally broke through in the seventh inning. Dane Lamont led off with a double and scored when Austin Kraus reached on an error. Later that inning Alex Fowler doubled to bring home Josh Ottum and Kraus to cut the Eagles lead to 10-3. In the ninth, Ottum led off with a walk and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Fowler then brought home Trent Medrano with a sacrifice fly, and Ryan Fields plated Jeff Tucker with a single to center field to close the scoring.
Five different Eagles had hits on the day. Lamont, Cheaney and Fowler each had a double with Fowler adding three runs batted in. Schatzberg took the loss for Edgewood College striking out three batters in 4.2 innings. Alex Meister worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning in relief.
The Eagles will get another crack at a non-conference road game on Wednesday this week. Edgewood College will face Beloit College in a 3:00 p.m. single game at Beloit.
