FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Edgewood College baseball team wrapped up their 2018 spring trip with a 5-1 loss to Bethel University on Saturday morning at Terry Park. Steve Gavin struck out a career-high nine batters over eight strong innings, but the Eagles couldn't generate enough run support. Edgewood College concludes their trip with a 3-6 record.
Edgewood College took the lead after just their first three batters. Bryan Sternig smacked a double down the left field line, and Nik Visone sacrificed him over to second base. Then Alex Fowler singled past the second baseman to bring him Sternig with the first run of the game.
However, Bethel University (11-1) put up a pair of runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-1 lead, and the Royals' starting pitcher Carson Selin allowed just one more hit and struck out 10 batters in six innings to keep the Eagles at bay.
Gavin finished with nine strikeouts in eight innings pitched, allowing nine hits, but just two earned runs. Gavin moved up to 10th place all-time with 111 career strikeouts, trailing teammate Adam Eck and Matt Krueger (2008-10) by just one strikeout for eighth place. Logan Pitts came on the pitch the ninth. Sternig, Fowler and Jeff Tucker each had a hit and a stolen base for the Eagles.
Edgewood College will next be in action the weekend of March 24-25 in Crawfordville, Indiana. The Eagles will play a three-game series with Wabash College, with the opening doubleheader on Saturday, March 24.
