Eagles handled by Wabash in pair of defeats

WESTFIELD, Ind. – It was tough sledding in their first games back in the Midwest after dropping the first two games of their 3-game set at Wabash, 8-2 and 14-2, on Friday night. It was the Edgewood College baseball team's first games back in the Midwest after coming off a 3-6 Florida spring break trip last week.

The Eagles dug themselves an early 6-0 hole in game one and couldn't fight their way back in an 8-2 game one loss to the Little Giants.

For the second-straight game, the Eagle defense did not commit an error, but couldn't stop the Little Giants from racking up eight runs on 12 hits. Wabash rapped a pair of RBI singles to spark a 4-run fifth inning and later scored two runs on a pair of wild pitches by Eagle starter Adam Eck. The 6-0 lead through five innings was all Wabash would need as they won the first meeting between these two teams.

Ryan Fields added an RBI single to right center to score Nik Visone in the sixth inning and Callen Gavic's single led to a Garrett Bogucki score on an ensuing throwing error in the seventh for the Eagles only two runs.

Nick Cheaney, the team's leading hitter, Bogucki, and Gavic each finished with a team-high two hits.

Senior starter Adam Eck was tagged with his first defeat of the season (1-1) after giving up nine hits and six earned runs in 4.2 innings.

Wabash's Roberts allowed two unearned runs and struck out six in seven innings to remain undefeated (4-0).

A trio of bases loaded, bases clearing hits by Wabash spelled doom for the Eagles in a 14-2 loss in game two. Both teams gave away runs as they combined for six errors, six unearned runs, and 20 runners left on base.

Wabash jumped on Eagle ace Steve Gavin early on with a bases-clearing double by Terry in the bottom of the second inning, part of a string of four straight hits, to assume the 3-0 lead. The Little Giants capped their seventh 10-run game of the year with a bases-loaded triple by Nelson in the seventh and a Blevins 3-run double in the eighth.

Bryan Sternig scored Bogucki on a sac fly to center field in the fifth and pinch runner Josh Ottum scored on a wild pitch in the seventh for the Eagles only two runs, both unearned.

Gavin dropped to 1-2 on the season after surrendering six runs (three earned) while striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work. It was tough outing against a high powered Wabash team that is averaging over eight runs per game and batting .328 as a team.

Bogucki led the team with two hits for an offense that only had five hits and struck out 12 times. Wabash's starter Cochlan was a strikeout catalyst with eight punch outs in six innings while giving up just one unearned run.

The Eagles third and final game against Wabash on Sunday was cancelled due to snow. They will now open up NACC play on the road against the NACC defending champion Concordia Chicago next Saturday (March 31) at noon.
