FORT MYERS, Fla. - UW-Stout scored eight runs over the final three innings to break open a close game and send the Edgewood College baseball team to their second straight defeat by a score of 15-9. Junior Bryan Sternig had a career-high four hits, but the Eagles were undone by a number of errors in the field.
Alex Fowler put Edgewood College (0-2) ahead 3-1 in the second inning with an RBI double that scored Paul Cappetta and Nik Visone. Cappetta contribute two RBIs of his own in the third inning, driving home Sternig and Garrett Bogucki with a bases loaded single to give the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
After UW-Stout (3-3) took a 7-5 lead in the top of the fifth, Cappetta came through again in the bottom of the inning. Sternig and Visone opened the inning with singles, Cappetta rapped another single to score two runs and tie the game. Then in the sixth, Sternig gave the Eagles an 8-7 lead with a base hit to drive home Sam McGill who had reached on a fielder's choice.
However, the final three innings belonged to the Blue Devils. UW-Stout took the lead with two runs in the seventh and blew the game open with five runs in the ninth. Eleven of the Blue Devils' 15 runs in the game were unearned.
Sternig's 4-for-5 day broke his career-high of three hits that he recorded last season against Illinois Tech. Cappetta also had a career-high with four runs batted in while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Ryan Fields also had two hits in the game.
Adam Eck received his first start of the season, pitching four innings and allowing one earned run while striking out four batters. Eck now has 99 career strikeouts. Will Mossa took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings of relief, despite not allowing an earned run.
Edgewood College will continue their Fort Myers trip on Monday with a doubleheader against Haverford College. First pitch for those games will be at 12:00 p.m. (ET)/11:00 a.m. (CT).
