MADISON, Wis. – In a fast-paced battle between two of the NACC's middling offenses, it was the Edgewood College women's basketball team that fell shorts against Dominican, 56-47. An abundance of blocks coming from the Dominican University defense made all of the difference on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College came out strong on Tuesday night and led 17-11 at the end of the first period. Strong shooting from the trio of Alyssa Lemirande, Abby Shane, and Lexi Walter led the Eagles to a 10-point lead halfway through the second period. The Stars responded quickly with a 9-point run sparked by a jumper in the paint from Timiya Ray. Edgewood College ended up taking a 25-24 lead into the break.
- Coming out of halftime the Stars took their first lead of the night and never looked back. Despite holding Dominican to a shooting percentage of 33.4 through the third and four period, the Eagles offense was held at bay by the blocking power of Nyema Burns. The junior put up eight blocks throughout the contest and kept the Eagles short game finding success.
- Edgewood College got the score back to 39-37 off a three-pointer from Shane before Dominican rallied off six-points to put the finishing touches on the contest.
- Shane led the Eagles offense with 15 points, five assists, and two steals. Walter wasn't far behind putting up 13 points and a career-high three blocks, while Lemirande came away with 10 points. Brooke Lonigro continued to distribute the ball well, recording six assists in the contest.
- Senior Allison Gordon finished the contest with an impressive 16 rebounds, good for a career-high.
THE OPPOSITION
- Timiya Ray finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Stars while Alisha Markley came away with 11 points.
- Nyema Burns highlighted the Stars defense pulling down eight rebounds and recording eight blocks in the contest.
