Balanced attack gives Eagles bounce-back win in Puerto Rico

TRUJILLO ALTO, P.R. – The Edgewood College Women's Basketball team was looking to rebound after a disappointing showing in its first game in Puerto Rico Tuesday. The Eagles did just that Thursday with a solid defensive effort in a 53-45 win over Alvernia. Edgewood College also featured a balanced scoring attack with 10 different players scoring in the non-conference win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (6-3) got rolling early, leading 14-4 after the opening quarter. The Eagles jumped out to a 9-0 lead which was capped off by a Brooke Lonigro 3-point make with 6:01 left in the opening quarter. Lexi Walter scored the first six points of the game and the Eagles forced misses on the first five shots from Alvernia.

- The Eagles were strong defensively throughout the contest, holding the Golden Wolves to 25.8 percent shooting. That included Alvernia making just 2-of-15 shots (13.3 percent) in the opening quarter.

- Edgewood College held a 13-point lead at halftime but saw the Golden Wolves cut into that with a 5-0 run to start the second half. The Eagles would respond, pushing their lead to a game-high 15 points after Lonigro connected on another 3-point make with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

- In the fourth quarter, Alvernia never got closer than eight points and the Eagles held a 15-point lead on a couple of different occasions. Freshman Mady Pahl helped put the game away with six-straight Eagles points, the last giving Edgewood College a 48-36. Maryn Ferron, who finished with 10 points, buried a 3-point basket moments later, pushing the Eagles lead to 51-36.

- A great defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack were two big reasons for the Eagles success on Thursday. Ten different players scored, led by Abby Shane who contributed 11 points, nine of those coming from 3-point range. The Eagles made 7-of-21 from deep, three from Shane and two each from Ferron and Lonigro.

- Lonigro led all players with four assists as the Eagles did a great job of sharing the basketball, finishing with 13 helpers on 20 made field goals. Alvernia totaled just five assists in the game. Lonigro also led the Eagles on the boards and had a great all-around stat line, finishing the game with seven points, eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

THE OPPOSITION
- Alvernia was paced by Jannelle Robinson who led the Golden Wolves with nine points. Dej'hanee McNeal led all players with nine rebounds.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College welcomes NACC-leading Wisconsin Lutheran to the Todd Wehr Edgedome next Saturday, December 29. The Eagles and Warriors are set for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
