Mary Washington shuts down Eagles in Puerto Rico Opener

TRUJILLO ALTO, P.R. – One game after scoring a season-best 97 points, the Edgewood College Women's Basketball offense went cold in 55-27 defeat against Mary Washington Tuesday at the Puerto Rico Clasico. Edgewood College shot just 16.3 percent from the floor in the non-conference setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (5-3) led 11-8 after the opening quarter but the second quarter is where things took a turn for the worse. The Eagles were held without a point in the quarter, being outscored 14-0, which led to a 22-11 halftime deficit. Edgewood College was 0-for-11 from the floor and committed eight turnovers in the second quarter.

- In the opening quarter, Abby Shane and Maryn Ferron connected on makes from deep, while Lexi Walter added three from the charity stripe, each player finishing with three points after 10 minutes of play.

- The second half saw Mary Washington extend its lead, outscoring Edgewood College 12-10 in the third and 21-6 in the fourth for a 55-27 final.

- Edgewood College committed 18 turnovers in the setback compared to just nine for Mary Washington. Mary Washington shot 37.3 percent from the floor, including 46.7 percent in the second half.

- Shane and Jennifer Freeman each scored six points to pace the Eagles with Freeman connecting on 2-of-4 shots from 3-point range. Delaney Wilhelm controlled the glass with a career-best 14 rebounds.

THE OPPOSITION
- Mary Washington was led by Tory Martin who scored 13 points and added four rebounds. Erika Carter nearly had a double-double with eight points and 11 boards.

- Mary Washington served as a good non-conference test for the Eagles. Mary Washington has been to the NCAA Tournament nine times since the 2004-05 season, including most recently as 2016-17.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will have an off day in Puerto Rico Wednesday before looking to rebound Thursday against Alvernia. The Thursday contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Puerto Rico, 11 a.m. central time.
