Eagles open NACC season with impressive showing against Muskies

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Women's Basketball team wanted to put together a strong showing in its 2018-19 home opener against Lakeland University Saturday afternoon. The Eagles did just that, moving their record to 3-0 (1-0 NACC) with a 68-50 win over the Muskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Freshman Lexi Walter was dominant in her first game at the Todd Wehr Edgedome as the Hortonville, Wisconsin native led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Maryn Ferron added 12 points off the bench as the Eagles reserves outscored Lakeland's 39-24.

- Lakeland came out strong on Saturday and led 7-2 early, but the Eagles responded with a strong finish to close the opening quarter, taking a 13-11 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Eagles continued the momentum into the second quarter and took a 10-point lead after Walter made a layup with 3:52 to go (27-17). After a Lakeland 3-pointer, Ferron buried a three of her own to put the Eagles back up 10. Edgewood College ended up taking a 33-25 lead into the break.

- The Eagles extended their lead to 11 after the third quarter, thanks to a 13-10 advantage in the third. Abby Shane buried a 3-pointer with just over a minute left in the period to give Edgewood College a 46-35 lead going into the final period.

- Lakeland got the score back to 49-39 before the Eagles rallied off seven-straight points to put the finishing touches on the NACC win. Ferron started the run with a shot from long range while Shane and Walter each converted buckets to give Edgewood College a 56-39 advantage.

- The Eagles showcased their depth with nine different players scoring and Shane joining Walter and Ferron in double figures. Allison Gordon and Diamond Pikulyk added seven points each.

- Edgewood did a great job sharing the basketball, assisting on 22-of-27 made field goals. Alyssa Lemirande recorded a game-high seven assists while Brooke Lonigro dished out six compared to just one turnover.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College is 1-0 in NACC play for the first time since the 2014-15 season. The Eagles are 3-0 overall for the first time since at least the 2003-04 season.

THE OPPOSITION
- Miranda Jacobson finished with eight points and nine rebounds for the Muskies while Megan Will added eight points and eight rebounds.

- The Eagles held Lakeland College to 26.6 percent shooting and 20.8 shooting from 3-point range. Edgewood meanwhile shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) and 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will visit Concordia Chicago next Saturday for a NACC matchup at 2 p.m.
