Eagles shoot way to season-opening win

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Freshman Maryn Ferron scored a game-high 23 points, one of four Edgewood College Women's Basketball players in double figures as the Eagles opened the 2018-19 season with a 78-72 win over Lake Forest College Friday at the Loras Tipoff Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles were dialed in from 3-point range on Friday, drilling 10-of-17 from deep led by Ferron's 5-of-7 performance. Ferron impressed in her collegiate debut with 23 points, 17 of those in the second half. Abby Shane, who finished with 15 points, added 3-of-7 shooting from distance. Edgewood College also performed at the free throw line, making 18-of-22 (81.8 percent) and finished the game shooting 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor.

- Four Edgewood College players finished the game with double figures. Joining Ferron and Shane was sophomore Alyssa Lemirande with 11 points and rookie Jordyn Kriegl added 10. Sophomore point guard Brooke Lonigro did a good job setting up the Eagles scorers with a team-best six assists while Lemirande added four dimes.

- The Eagles and Foresters went back-and-forth in the opening period with Edgewood College holding a five-point lead on a couple different occasions. The Eagles would extend their lead to 10 points with 2:48 left in the half after a Delaney Wilhelm 3-point basket finished off a 9-0 Edgewood College run. After the Wilhelm three, Lake Forest scored eight-straight points to end the half as the Eagles took a 31-29 lead into the break.

- The third quarter was saw both teams light it up, Edgewood College outscoring the Foresters 29-27 in the period to take a four-point lead into the fourth quarter. After falling behind 38-35, senior Allison Gordon sparked a 17-7 run with a steal, followed by a 3-point play (layup and free throw) to tie the score at 38-38. The Eagles hit four 3-pointers in the quarter and led 60-56 going into the fourth.

- After Lake Forest cut the Eagles lead to 60-58, Ferron buried back-to-back 3-pointers to give Edgewood College an eight-point lead early in the fourth. The Eagles continued their run, extending their lead to 75-60 with 3:24 to play. Edgewood College allowed just four points over the first 6:55 of the fourth quarter.

- Lake Forest rallied back and cut the Edgewood College lead to three with 32 seconds left. The Eagles closed out the win thanks to three made free throws down the stretch, two from Kriegl and one from Ferron.

EAGLES LEADERS
- Ferron (23), Shane (15), Lemirande (11), and Kriegl (10) all finished in double figures for the Eagles. Ferron, Lemirande, and Kriegl were all playing in their first game for Edgewood College.

- Lonigro dished out six assists and Allison Gordon and Ferron each pulled down six rebounds. Gordon also paced the team with three steals.

THE OPPOSITION
- Hannah Hiland and Kelsey Burton each posted double-doubles for the Foresters. Hiland led the team with 19 points while Burton chipped in with 15. Both players pulled down 11 rebounds and Burton missed a triple double by two assists, finishing with a game-high eight.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- This marks the second-straight season Edgewood College has won its season-opener. Last year, the Eagles also put up 78 points in a 78-54 season-opening win over Illinois Tech.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College will play Beloit College tomorrow at 12 p.m. at the Loras Tipoff Classic.
