DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Edgewood College men's basketball team was unable to pick up their first win of the season, as the University of Dubuque's speed and shooting proved to be too much on Wednesday night. Despite forcing four lead changes, the Eagles dropped the season-opener 82-66 to the Spartans.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College jumped out to a 6-2 lead just over two minutes into the game behind two straight 3-pointers from senior Sy Staver. The University of Dubuque quickly gained the lead eight minutes in and didn't look back, owning a 43-35 advantage at the break.
- The Eagles came into the second half with just an eight point deficit, but were unable to catch up with the Spartans despite putting up 31 points to the Spartans 39 points.
- Off the bench the Eagles matched the Spartans with 27 points in the contest.
- Sophomore Jake Negus had a game-high 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including four assists and four rebounds. Ben Seefeld added 14 points and four rebounds, while Staver finished the game with 12 points.
- Staver led the Eagles making four 3-pointers, while five others contributed to nine 3-pointers.
FOR THE OPPONENTS
- The Spartans shot the ball exceptionally well at 61 percent (30-for-49) including going 31 percent (5-for-16) from 3-point range.
- Marcus McDaniel had a team-high 16 points for the Spartans, adding four assists and four rebounds.
- Michael Williams put together 15 points, three assists, three rebounds, and two steals.

- Edgewood College will be on the road again in an exhibition on Saturday night. The Eagles will face Concordia University - St. Paul at the Gangelhoff Center. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
