Eagles defeat Green Knights, Vikings behind career night from Zapuchlak

MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College volleyball team was able to turn out two victories in their final matches of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles offensive spark came as senior Alex Zapuchlak recorded 2,000 career assists in a 3-2 victory over St. Norbert College. In the second match of the day the Eagles came away with the 3-0 sweep over Lawrence University to close out the 2018 season with a 13-17 record.

Behind 53 kills and a defense that registered 67 digs and 52 assists, Edgewood College (13-17) owned a 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 15-7 victory over St. Norbert College (12-14) in the first match of the day.

The Eagles dominated the second set of the match, recording a match-high .391 hitting percentage behind four kills from Sarah Pfeifer, and three digs from both Sarah Uczen and Alex Zapuchlak. After dropping the fourth set to the Green Knights who hit a match-high .419, the Eagles dominated the fifth set to clinch the victory. The set began and ended on kills from Tori Wiskow.

Mackenzie Doherty added a team high 12 kills, while Pfiefer was right behind with 11 kills. Brittany Sager and Zapuchlak both recorded 20-plus assists, combining for 45 total. The Eagles defense was headlined by Uczen with 18 digs, Zapuchlak with a season-high 16 digs, and Meister recorded 15 digs in the first victory of the day.

Edgewood College finished off the night with a 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 sweep of Lawrence College. In the final match of the day the Eagles were led by Doherty with nine kills, Zapuchlak with 18 assists and 10 digs. The sweep featured kills from nine different Eagles, in a team effort that included 17 different players. The Eagles held Lawrence to a .012 hitting percentage.

The Eagles wrapped up their season with 13 wins, while senior class Zapuchlak, Cole Jordee, and Tori Wiskow ended their careers with 74 wins, two NACC semifinal appearances, and one NACC tournament runner-up finishes.
