Stavers' free throws clinch win over Regents

MADISON, Wis. - Sy Staver made two free throws with 14.7 seconds remaining, then pulled off a bit of sleight of hand on the final play to secure a 68-67 victory for Edgewood College in a pivotal NACC game with Rockford University. Travis Kell scored 16 points as the Eagles came out on top of 11 lead changes in just the second half.

Jake Negus gave Edgewood College a 66-64 lead with 2:05 remaining with a three-pointer from the left wing, but Rockford University (8-10, 6-7 NACC) answered on the two possessions later. Tony Diemer nailed a three-pointer with 46.1 seconds to go to give the Regents a 67-66 lead. After a turnover, Edgewood College was (7-11, 7-6 NACC) forced to foul and the Regents, who struggled mightily at the free throw line all night, missed a pair of shots with 25 seconds to go.

The Eagles put the ball in the hands of Staver who drove hard to the hoop and drew a blocking foul on Rockford with 14.7 seconds left. Staver calmly made both free throws to put the Eagles ahead 68-67. Rockford pushed the ball up the floor and looked for Diemer again, but Travis Kell stuffed Diemers' shot and Staver stripped the ball away in the ensuing scramble. He was fouled with 0.9 seconds left.

Staver missed his first attempt, however, and the Eagles opted to have him intentionally miss the second free throw so as to limit the Regents chances of a miracle winner. Staver executed it so well, that he beat two Rockford players to the ball and dribbled out the final second of the clock in front of the Eagles bench.

Kell led the way, despite battling some foul trouble, scoring 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds in only 20 minutes of action. Ben Seefeld came off the bench to make all eight of his free throw attempts and finish with 14 points. Negus made three three-point baskets for 13 points and a team-high four assists. Edgewood College didn't shoot particularly well at just 37.3 percent, but had a huge advantage at the free throw line making 18 of 23 there.

Rockford's Tony Diemer, who surpassed 1,000 career points in the opening minutes of the game, led all scorers with 26 points. His brother, Kevin Diemer had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Regents shot 49.1 percent from the field and went 9-for-14 from the three-point line, but his only 31.6 percent (6-for-19) at the free throw line.
