Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles pull away from Inferno behind Pikulyk, blistering second half

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Diamond Pikulyk continued her string of high scoring games after pouring in a career-high 23 points and the Edgewood College women's basketball team shot nearly 60 percent in the second half to beat Alverno on the road, 79-65, on Saturday night.

Pikulyk posted 18 or more points for the third time in the last four games and shot 11 of 15 from the field to go with seven rebounds. Abby Shane broke out of her shooting slump with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting and combined with Pikulyk for 23 of the Eagles 50 points in the second half. Brooke Lonigro dished out 10 assists against just two turnovers and scored nine points.

The Eagles (7-10, 5-7 NACC), who broke a four-game skid with their first win since January 2 against Alverno, trailed 31-29 at the break after being outscored 24-13 in the second period. It was a different story in the third quarter.

An 3-pointer by the Inferno's leading scorer Karli Selear gave Alverno their last lead of the game, 38-37, at the 4:32 mark in the third. Shane countered with a jumper to start a 9-0 run and capped it with a deep three as the Eagles claimed the lead for good. The Eagles finished the quarter on a 17-5 run that included seven points by Shane to sweep the season series against Alverno.

It was an offensive outburst for an Eagle team that shot a season-high 54.2 percent from the field, the first time they've shot over 50 percent this season, and made 5 of 9 3-pointers on the game. Oddly enough, they shot better from the field and behind the arc then they did from the free throw line (10-for-19).

Allison Gordon, who pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, helped the Eagles control the glass as they outrebounded Alverno, 42-31. The Eagles benefited from their wealth of depth against an Alverno team that only played six players.

Despite 21 points from Selear and 18 points from Gabby Hood, the Inferno lost for the sixth time in the last seven games after being held to 39 percent shooting.

The Eagles look to build their win streak when they face Rockford (4-13, 2-10 NACC) at home this Wednesday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. Marian beat Rockford, 51-39, for their first win in NACC play on Saturday.
