LISLE, Ill. – A pair of penalty kick scores by Henry Simon and Garrett Lee's ninth goal of the season made things interesting, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 4-1 deficit against Benedictine in a 5-3 defeat on Saturday afternoon.
As he always does, Lee came up with his team-leading ninth score of the season off an assist by Luke Miller on a broken play in the 75th. Edgewood College (6-4, 1-3 NACC) trailed just 4-3 after Simon's second goal just a few minutes later in the 82nd. A last minute tally by Benedictine (7-4, 2-1 NACC) sealed the deal as Edgewood College dropped their second-straight match on the road.
Edgewood College outshot Benedictine, 11-9, in the second half and over the course of the match, countered eight Benedictine shots on goal with six of their own. All-American forward Nick Kapetanos put Benedictine on the board in the ninth minute and led an offense that jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first half.
Simon's first goal of the season cut the Benedictine lead to 2-1 in the 60th minute, but Benedictine was quick to counter. Erik Stammer assisted a goal up the middle in the 65th then added one of his own in the 68th to put Edgewood College in a deep 4-1 hole.
Benedictine's Erik Stammer finished with two goals and two assists against Edgewood College's Brandyn Storhoff (0-1), who started his first match of the season against last season's NACC tournament champions. It was Benedictine's fifth straight victory over Edgewood College.
Simon tied Stammer with eight total shots, including five on goal, and led an offense that put up three goals against one of the best goalkeepers in the conference.
The Eagles open up a three-match homestand against Lakeland University this Wednesday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field.
