OREGON, Wis. – After finding themselves down 2-0 just 12 minutes into the match, the Edgewood College women's soccer team nearly fought their way back in a 3-2 defeat to Aurora University on a hot and muggy Saturday afternoon.
Mady Warda and
Alisha Nolden both scored for the Eagles.
A Spartan goal in the 82nd minute left the Eagles (4-4, 0-1 NACC) down 3-1 with time winding down. Just three minutes later, Nolden responded with her first goal of the game, and third of the season, off a deflected shot by the goalie from two yards out to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Eagles final goal of the game was set up by
Lauren Clark's corner kick and senior
Hannah Menzia's deflected shot on goal.
Mady Warda, who opened up the scoring for the Eagles in the 30th minute, nearly tied it up with a saved shot attempt less than a minute later. Clark produced the last opportunity for the Eagles, but it came up short in the 89th. It was the 11th time in 16 all-time meetings between these two teams where a match was decided by one goal.
Warda's first goal came from penalty kick distance in the middle of the box off a slick pass from Nolden to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1 in the first half.
Jessica Ortiz led the Spartans (1-6, 1-0 NACC) with two goals, both in the first 12 minutes of the game, and spearheaded an offense that outshot the Eagles, 15-7, on the day.
Eagle goalkeeper
Grace Wildeboer matched a season-high with eight saves and surrendered three goals on a trio of unreachable shots.
The Eagles face Concordia Wisconsin at home this Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field. It will conclude their eight-match home stand as they seek their first conference win of the season.
