OREGON, Wis. – Once again, a little magic from
Garrett Lee gave the Edgewood College men's soccer team a thrilling victory over Aurora, 4-3, in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Lee added a hat trick and knocked in the game-winning goal in the 96th minute on a hot and muggy afternoon in Oregon.
After taking the early lead on Lee's first score, the Eagles (6-2, 1-1 NACC) battled back from 2-1 and 3-2 deficits, respectively, for their first win over the Spartans (5-5, 0-1 NACC) in the last six matches. Down 3-2, Lee tied it up after securing a scramble from two yards out and found the back of the net in the 81st minute. Freshman
Jordan Stark got the assist after directing the high-arcing free kick towards Lee and the goal.
The Eagles took advantage of an Aurora red card at the start of the first overtime and used their man-up advantage to score the game winner. Senior
Luke Miller fed a well-placed ball into a streaking Lee in the middle of the box and let the Eagles leading scorer do the rest in a one-on-one battle with the goalie. Lee's hat trick gave him a team-leading eight goals on the season.
An entertaining first half that was tied 2-2 set up the overtime showdown. Aurora managed to score on a deflected shot off an Eagle defender and later on a penalty kick while the Eagles netted both of their goals off of deflected goalie saves.
Aurora outshot the Eagles, 19-17, and were led by Collin Foreman's game-high six shots and penalty kick score.
Freshman goalkeeper
Dan Dombrowski posted seven saves in the longest start of his career and
Jordan Stark scored once and added the game-tying assist in the 88th minute to Lee. The attacking freshman was the offensive catalyst in the second half and often set the offense up for many of their best scoring opportunities.
The Eagles face Concordia Wisconsin on the road this Wednesday, September 27 at 4:30 p.m.
