MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Full of confidence from a 5-1 record in non-conference play, the Edgewood College men's soccer team faced MSOE on the opening night of the NACC season. Despite scoring the first goal of the game, the Eagles couldn't hang on to the lead, falling to the Raiders 3-1.
Edgewood College (5-2, 0-1 NACC) began to put pressure on the Raiders in the 17th minute. Henry Simon fired a pair of shots, one that hit the cross bar and one was saved by MSOE goalkeeper Riley Bruce. In the 23rd minute, Garrett Lee collected the ball in the penalty area, held off a Raider defender and fired a shot pas Bruce for a 1-0 Eagles lead. It was Lee's fifth goal of the season, and the fourth straight game in which he's scored. The goal moves Lee past Jon Longley (1995-98) and into 11th place all-time in program history with 21 career goals.
The Eagles lead was short-lived, however, as MSOE (4-2, 1-0 NACC) returned the score just 30 seconds later. Sam D'Amato's blast from the top of the box was redirected by Lucas D'Amato and into the net. The score remained 1-1 in halftime.
MSOE grabbed the lead on a goal by Brandon Herman in the 57th minute. Herman collected a Raider free kick and poked it from close range. In the 77th minute, the Raiders' Carsen Albert took advantage of an Eagle miscue to make the score 3-1.
Eagle goalkeeper Dan Dombrowski made six saves in the loss. Simon led the Eagles with six shots including four on goal, while Luke Miller put two shots on the frame. The Raiders outshot the Eagles 17-11 for the match.
Edgewood College will return to action on Saturday. The Eagles will host Aurora University in a 11:00 a.m. match at Oregon High School in Oregon, Wis.
