MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team continued their winning ways with their second consecutive shutout victory. The Eagles defeated Ripon College 4-0 at Goodman Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. Four different Eagles scored in the match.
Right at the 10-minute mark, Sean Surtees put Edgewood College (5-1) on the board. Jordan Stark caught the Redhawks in a 2-on-1 situation, and fed Surtees streaking down the middle of the field. Surtees shot was partially deflected by Ripon goalkeeper Jimmy Amedeo, but the ball bounced high off the turf and into the net before anyone could chase it down.
Fifteen minutes later, Evan Oppermann scored his first career goal. Victor Lombardino set him up with a pretty pass through traffic, and Oppermann deposited the ball in the net for a 2-0 lead.
The Eagles would make it 3-0 in the 55th minute. Surtees found Zander Rothering cutting into the right side of the penalty area. Rothering drew out Amedeo and fed the ball back to Garrett Lee, who finished into a wide open net from five yards out. In the 64th minute, it was Rothering's turn to score. Surtees was pulled down attacking in the box, and Rothering converted the penalty kick for the eventual 4-0 final margin.
Dan Dombrowski earned the win by playing goalkeeper in the first half, while Brandyn Storhoff and Max Palzkill split the second half. No Eagles goalkeeper was forced to make a save, as Edgewood College outshot Ripon College (2-4-1) by a 27-2 margin. Amadeo made 11 saves for the Redhawks.
Edgewood College's biggest test of the season arrives on Wednesday night. The Eagles will travel to Milwaukee for their NACC opener against MSOE in a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Viets Field.
