Delleman's big day comes up short at Alverno

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Edgewood College got a double and a home run from Grace Delleman, but it wasn't enough to overcome Alverno College on Friday. The Eagles fell in the opening game 3-1 despite out-hitting the Inferno. In game two, Edgewood College led until Alverno's five-run fifth inning lifted them to a 7-5 victory.

Edgewood College (4-32, 1-19 NACC) trailed 3-1 through five innings of game one before getting on the scoreboard. In the sixth, Elizabeth Soter and Hannah Parisi singled to put runners at first and second with one out.Delleman entered as a pinch hitter and delivered an RBI double down the left field line to score Soter from second.

In the seventh, the Eagles nearly rallied from behind with two outs. Shannon Whitmus and Alyssa Hickey singled, and Soter loaded the bases with a walk. However, Jordan Anderson's hard grounder was snared by Alverno third baseman Kaitlyn Johnson and she stepped on the bag to end the game.

Whitmus went 2-for-4 to lead the Eagles in hitting. Delleman had the Eagles' only extra base hit with her double, and Hickey had a single and a stolen base. In the circle, Whitmus struck out four batters and surrendered just one earned run in the loss. Edgewood College had nine hits compared the Alverno's five.

In game two, Edgewood College scored two in the top of the first inning to jump in front. Jordan Anderson delivered an RBI single to bring home Whitmus, and Hickey scored on an errant throw from the Inferno centerfielder. The Eagles made it 3-0 in the third when Delleman singled and eventually scored from third on a passed ball. Delleman came through again in the fifth with a one-out, solo home run to left-center field to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.

However, Alverno scored five runs in the fifth on four hits and an Eagle error to take a 7-4 lead. Soter's RBI single in the seventh scored Delleman to make it 7-5, but the Eagles couldn't tie the game.

Delleman had a huge game, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base and three runs scored. Soter had two hits, while Sabrina Luedtke smacked a double. Whitmus struck out six batters in the second game.

Weather permitting, Edgewood College will wrap up the 2017 season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Marian University at Ceniti Park in Verona. The Eagles and Sabres are scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
