MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College softball battled to the end, but suffered a season-ending doubleheader sweep to Marian University on Tuesday at the Goodman Sports Complex. The Eagles nearly rallied from a six-run deficit before falling 7-4 in game one and then dropped the second game 6-2. Marian University clinched a berth in the NACC Tournament with the two wins.
Edgewood College (4-34, 1-21 NACC) trailed 6-0 in the fourth inning of game one before getting on the scoreboard. Grace Delleman doubled down the left field line with one out, and then moved to third on Jordan Anderson's groundout. With Hannah Parisi at the plate, Delleman scored on a wild pitch. The Eagles added another run in the fifth when Megan Hauge singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
In the sixth, Parisi doubled off the left field wall, and Sabrina Luedtke drove her home with an RBI single to cut the Sabres lead to 7-3. The Eagles picked up another run in the seventh when pinch runner Sarah Elliott scored following Shannon Whitmus's single and a Marian throwing error. The Eagles had first and third with no outs in the seventh, but could not push across another run.
Whitmus had two hits, while Delleman and Parisi each had a double. Whitmus threw another complete game, striking out six batters and allowing five earned runs on seven hits.
In game two, Marian University (26-14, 13-9 NACC) lead 3-0 before the Eagles put the pressure on with two runs in the fifth inning. Elliott singled and eventually scored on Alyssa Hickey's double off the third base bag. The next batter, Delleman, doubled to deep left center to bring home Hickey and the Eagles trailed just 3-2. However, Marian scored three runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Hickey went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Eagles attack. Delleman and Parisi also had a double each. Whitmus struck out her 200th and 201st batters of her career to become the seventh pitcher in Edgewood College history to reach 200 strikeouts.
