FOND DU LAC, Wis. – There's never a good day for the bats to go quiet, but in the middle of a race for NACC Tournament berth is certainly less than ideal. The Edgewood College baseball team was limited to just one run in getting swept 5-1 and 4-0 at the hands of Marian University. The Eagle still own the sixth and final spot in the tournament with six games remaining, but are just one game ahead of three teams in the chase.
In the opening game, Edgewood College (17-13, 6-8 NACC) had five of their six hits in the first five innings. Marian University (11-20, 5-9 NACC) put two runs on the board in the second inning, before the Eagles broke through in the fifth. With two outs, Bryan Sternig singled and advanced to second on a balk. Then Danny Appino pulled a ball down the right field line to score Sternig. However, the Sabres responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-1 lead. The Eagles managed just one hit in the final four innings.
Blake Bieri allowed four earned runs on seven hits over seven innings and picked up his third loss of the season. Jared Horton pitched the eighth for the Eagles. No Eagle had more than two hits, although Nick Lehner reached base three times with a single and two walks.
The Edgewood College offense remained missing in game two. The Eagles had just four hits and only advanced a runner to third base once. Marian scored single runs in the first three innings and an insurance run in the seventh for all the offense they would need.
Jeff Wolf started and pitched the first two innings, before yielding to Steve Gavin. Gavin threw six innings, allowing just one run while striking out eight batters. On offense Patrick Wardlaw had a single and a stolen base.
Edgewood College is scheduled to host UW-Platteville on Wednesday evening for Veterans Appreciation Night at Stampfl Field. However, due to anticipated rain it is possible the game may be moved up a day to Tuesday night. Please consult EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com and our social media channels for the latest updates.
