Game Recap: Softball |

Pair of big innings too much for Eagles

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team suffered a pair of defeats to Wisconsin Lutheran, 9-1, and 10-1, after the Warriors utilized a five-run inning in game one and eight-run outburst in game two on Saturday afternoon.

Junior starter Shannon Whitmus (2-13) tossed her 10th complete game of the year in game one, but couldn't overcome a five-run, third inning by the Warriors (5-9, 2-0 NACC) in a 9-1 defeat. Whitmus also struck out four and allowed nine runs (five earned).

Six different players recorded one hit for the Eagles (2-16, 0-4 NACC) in an error-filled game that featured five unearned runs on six total errors. Hanna Parisi scored the Eagles lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Warrior fielding error in center field.

Warrior starter Abby Mahsem (2-0) gave up six hits and one unearned run to go with six strikeouts in seven innings. Leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Robison scored once and added a game-high three hits.

In game two, the Warriors scored eight runs, all unearned, to seize control in the second inning. The Eagles didn't respond until Elizabeth Soter scored the Eagles only run after an errant throw by the Wisconsin Lutheran catcher in the bottom of the fifth. The Warrior backstop was attempting to pick off Soter at second, but her throw sailed wide to the shortstop.

Parisi and Whitmus recorded the only two hits for an Eagle offense against a Warrior team that posted 10 runs (two earned) on 11 hits.

Eagle starter Grace Delleman (0-3) gave up 11 hits and only two earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.

Taylor Bjork (2-3) earned the victory for the Warriors after surrendering two hits and one unearned run over six innings. She also added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including a bases-clearing double that fueled the Warriors' big second inning.

The Eagles host a pair of doubleheaders next weekend against Benedictine on Saturday and Dominican on Sunday. First pitch is noon for both days.
