PLYMOUTH, Wis. - The Edgewood College softball team dropped a pair of NACC openers to Lakeland after being no-hit in 8-0 game one defeat and losing game two, 9-5, despite Grace Delleman's first three-hit game of the season.
The Eagles (2-14, 0-2 NACC) were held hitless in game one loss, 8-0 in five innings, by Lakeland starter Niki Saviano (4-3).
Leadoff hitters, Karly Vigani and Elizabeth Soter, were the only Eagles to reach base after drawing a pair of walks, and led an Eagle offense that forced the Muskie defense to make plays after striking out just three times. Eagle starter Shannon Whitmus (2-11) took the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits while striking out four.
After being held scoreless in the first nine innings of the day, the Eagle offense came alive with five runs in the final three innings of 9-5, game two defeat. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to overcome a seven-run outburst by Lakeland (8-8, 2-0 NACC) in the fourth inning.
Whitmus pushed across the Eagles' first run of the day with an RBI double in the top of the fifth and later scored on Delleman's ensuing RBI single. A Megan Hauge RBI single, Lakeland error, and Sabrina Luedtke RBI groundout accounted for the final three runs.
Delleman finished 3-for-4 with one run, one RBI, and one stolen base and was one of six Eagles to register a hit. Whitmus (2-12) gave up seven runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
Lakeland starter Taylor Bush (4-4) surrendered two earned runs and struck out 10 in her second complete game of the year and also finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a game-high three RBI.
The Eagles host Wisconsin Lutheran in their home opener tomorrow, Sunday, April 2 at noon out at Ceniti Park in Verona, Wis. Both teams have split their last four meetings.
