led NAPLES, Fla. – Junior Shannon Whitmus tossed a five-inning no-hitter and sophomore Jordan Anderson finished 3-for-3 with a three-run home run to guide the Eagles to their first win of the season over Centenary University (N.J.), 8-0, on Sunday morning.
What started out as a pitcher's duel through the first four-and-a-half innings turned into the Eagles (1-8) biggest offensive explosion of the year in the bottom of the fifth. Highlighted by Anderson's three-run homer to left field and capped by freshman Karly Vigani's game-clinching RBI single, the Eagles posted seven runs on eight hits in their highest scoring inning of the year.
Anderson added her third multi-hit performance in the last four games and belted her first home run of the season in a 3-for-3 showing at the plate to go with four RBI. The Munster, Ind. native is 8-for-14 (.571) with five RBI, one double, and one home run in five spring break games thus far.
Whitmus cruised all morning in her seventh straight start and added five strikeouts in her first career no-hitter and sixth in school history. It was the first Eagles no-hitter since Karlie Klossner's seven-inning gem in 2012 against MSOE. The Verona, Wis. native also went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run in the winning effort.
The Eagle offense finished with season-highs of eight runs and 12 hits to stop an eight-game skid to open the season.
It was another tough go in an 18-1 defeat to Nazareth College (N.Y.). Anderson generated the Eagles only run with a solo home run on a line drive to right center, her second of the day, in the fourth inning. The Golden Flyers scored 12 unearned runs in their second win of the day.
Vigani's lead-off single extended her team-best hit streak to six games.
The Eagles face Curry College (Mass.) and Geneva College (Pa.) in a 9:00 a.m. doubleheader tomorrow in Naples, Fla.
