NAPLES, Fla. - Powered by a pair of home runs from sophomores Grace Delleman and Jordan Anderson, the Edgewood College softball team overcame four errors to defeat Curry College (Mass.), 7-6, on a walk-off error in the eighth inning. Despite 10 hits in game two, the Eagles fell to Geneva, 9-4.
The Eagles (2-9) offense scored five runs on eight hits in the first seven innings, but relied on a pair of Colonel miscues in the eighth to win for the second time in their last three games.
Down 6-5 after an RBI single by the Colonels' Marissa Bruno in the top of the eighth, freshman Elizabeth Soter tied it up after scoring from second on an error by the second baseman. Anderson, who reached base for the fourth time, later moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on sophomore Sabrina Luedtke's groundout. She scored the winning run after the third basemen mishandled a backhanded attempt off the bat of sophomore Alyssa Hickey.
Anderson, who finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI, tied it up at five with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. It was her third home run in as many games and fueled an Eagle offense that posted a season-high four extra base hits.
Delleman's two-run home run in the second inning was her first of the season and opened up the scoring for the Eagles. Her two-run shot was part of a 2-for-3 performance that included a season-high two runs and two RBI.
Starter Shannon Whitmus (2-8) won her second-straight game after allowing six hits and five runs (two earned) while striking out six in a career-high eight innings pitched. The junior had to overcome three unearned runs by the Colonels (0-3), including both of Curry's runs that gave them the lead in the top of the sixth.
The Eagles racked up 10 hits, but lost game two to Geneva College (Pa.), 9-4, in a sloppy game that featured a combined six errors.
Whitmus, who also threw 5.0 innings and struck out three in her 10th start, was one of four Eagles to register two hits and added a team-best two RBI against a Golden Tornado team that led from the outset. Her RBI double in the bottom of the fourth cut the Geneva (7-4) lead to 4-3, but it was the closest the Eagles would come.
Geneva pulled away with five runs (four unearned) stretched across the fifth and sixth innings en route to their third straight win.
Soter, Anderson, and Megan Hauge each added two hits with Anderson and Hauge also contributing one RBI each. Soter relieved Whitmus for the final inning and tossed her first scoreless frame while striking out one.
Nine of the 11 Geneva position players registered at least one hit as they finished with a total of 11 on the day. Starter Bobbie Ann allowed four runs (two unearned), 10 hits, and struck out three in a 7.0-inning complete game.
The Eagles wrap up their 10-game spring break trip on Tuesday, March 14 with their final doubleheader against the College at Brockport and Salem State University at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
