NAPLES, Fla. – Junior starter Shannon Whitmus led the Edgewood College softball team after tossing a combined 12 innings (286 pitches) and tying the team lead with three hits in a pair of defeats against Kenyon College (Ohio), 8-2, and UMass-Dartmouth, 9-1.
Kenyon utilized a five-run third inning, highlighted by a 2-run triple, to pull away from the Eagles (0-8) and break open a close game. Whitmus started her sixth game of the season against the Ladies and finished with two strikeouts and 10 hits surrendered in 6.0 innings on the mound.
Sophomores Jordan Anderson and Sabrina Luedtke paced the team with two hits apiece, with Anderson opening the Eagle scoring with a bases loaded RBI-single in the third. Sarah Elliot's RBI single in the fourth concluded the scoring for an Eagle team that registered a season-high eight hits.
Kenyon added 10 hits and featured three players with two hits. Ladies' starter Keely Sweet (6-1) struck out seven and allowed two earned runs in a 7.0-inning complete game.
Alyssa Hickey's RBI-single to left field in the bottom of the seventh provided the Eagles only run in a 9-1 loss to the Corsairs (4-0). Whitmus collected two of the team's six hits, threw 133 pitches, and tossed six or more innings for fourth time in the last five games. The junior allowed eight hits while striking out six before turning it over to sophomore Grace Delleman in the final inning.
Freshman Karly Vigani's single in the third inning extended her team-best hitting streak to four games.
Led by three RBI from second baseman Marissa Spinuzzi, the Corsairs scored five of their nine runs in the final two innings and tallied 13 hits to remain undefeated. Starter Victoria Woodward (2-0) held the Eagles to three hits in five scoreless innings.
The Eagles continue their 10-game spring break trip with a pair of games against Centenary (N.J.) and Nazareth College on Sunday, March 12 at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (EST), respectively.
