MADISON, Wis. – There wasn't quite enough Senior Night magic left in the tank as the Edgewood College women's basketball suffered their toughest defeat of the year against Marian, 52-49, after missing the potential game-tying three pointer at the buzzer on Tuesday night.
Senior Sidney Peach scored 10 points to go with career-highs of five rebounds and four assists and junior Marissa Hoyer added seven points with a game-high 10 boards as both were honored during pre-game festivities. The added energy boosted the Eagles (0-22, 0-17 NACC) to a quick start, but couldn't hold on down the stretch.
Hoyer converted a left-handed layup off Peach's inbound pass to cut the Marian (4-18, 3-14 NACC) lead to 51-49 with 1:25 showing on the clock. An ensuing Sabre foul put MacKenzie Meyers at the line, but she missed both at the 42 second mark. Marian's Brandi Bender hit the first of two free throws after the Eagles fouled twice on one possession to force the bonus that gave Marian the decisive 3-point lead with 30 seconds remaining.
An Eagle timeout left one last shot with 11 seconds to go, but Cali Twet's potential game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer was just off the mark.
The Eagle offense was plagued by 21 turnovers, but posted their best shooting performance of the season from long range after finishing 6-for-13 from downtown. Freshman Meg Mengert, who had three three-point makes coming into tonight's game, added a career-high nine points after knocking down 3-of-4 triples.
Eagle sophomore Allison Gordon, who was well on her way to her fourth double-double after finishing with 11 points, eight boards, and a career-high four assists, played an abbreviated 22 minutes after picking up her fourth foul barely a minute into the second half. The Eagle offense wasn't quite the same without the services of their interior playmaker.
It was an entertaining first half out of the gates as the Eagles knocked down 5-of-7 three-pointers and trailed, 32-31, at the break, despite a 21-14 lead after the first quarter. Marian senior Nicole Paulus, who scored her 1000th career point midway through the second quarter, scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to lead the Sabres.
The Sabres won their third straight game against the Eagles despite finishing 1-for-8 on threes and 3-of-8 from the free throw line.
Next up for the Eagles is a matchup with Benedictine in their final home game of the season this Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 p.m.
