MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's basketball team held Benedictine University scoreless for nearly the entire fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to win the team's final home game of the 2016-17 season. The Eagles held Benedictine to a 56-45 victory, after losing by more the 50 points the first time they played in December.
Benedictine University (19-4, 15-3 NACC) opened a 35-20 halftime lead behind 10 points each from D'Asia Williams and Alena Moro. Edgewood College (0-23, 0-18 NACC) trailed by 21 after three quarters before the started reeling in Benedictine. Sidney Peach started the quarter with a three-point shot, and the two teams traded baskets until Benedictine held a 56-36 lead with eight minutes to play.
From that moment, Edgewood College held Benedictine without a point for the final eight minutes of the game. Marissa Hoyer scored a pair of baskets, and Meg Mengert scored a hoop and two free throws as the Eagles nearly cut Benedictine's margin down to single digits. Benedictine went 0-for-15 with two turnovers over the final eight minutes of the game.
Edgewood College received 10 points from Peach, including a pair of three-point baskets. Mengert finished with nine points, while Allison Gordon and Hoyer each had eight points. Hoyer also nabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Edgewood College had 10 assists and 11 turnovers for the game.
Benedictine was led by Williams with 15 points. Moro had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Benedictine shot 36.2 percent from the field, although the Eagles limited them to just 21.1 percent (4-for-19) at the three-point line.
Edgewood College will head out Wednesday for a game at Concordia University Wisconsin, before finishing the season next Saturday at Aurora University.
