MARQUETTE, Mich. - It was a tough start for the Edgewood College softball team as they dropped their first two games of the season against Calvin College, 5-0, and versus UW-Oshkosh, 22-0, at the Finlandia Dome Classic on Friday afternoon.
The Eagle (0-2) offense were held hitless in the opening game against the Titans with only sophomore
Jordan Anderson reaching base. Eagle starter
Shannon Whitmus (0-1), the only returning pitcher from last year's team, took the loss despite giving up five runs, including two earned, in six innings of work. The Verona, Wis. native struck out five and surrendered three hits in her 11th career start.
Calvin starter, Anna Gernant (1-0), was nearly flawless in her no-hitter after striking out 18 Eagles and giving up zero walks. Three of the Knights (1-0) five runs were attained via groundouts.
In game two, the Titans (2-0) took advantage of four Eagle errors to score 14 unearned runs in the Eagles 22-0 defeat. Eagle third basemen, freshman
Sarah Elliott, registered the Eagles only hit of the season on a single to third base in the third inning. Sophomore
Grace Delleman allowed five earned runs over 1.2 innings in her first career start.
Led by leadoff hitter Erika Berry's five hits and six RBI, the Titans totaled 22 runs on 17 hits to remain undefeated this season. Titan starter Sara Brunlieb (1-0) struck out eight Eagles and allowed one hit over four innings in her first win.
The Eagles have a short turnaround before playing host Finlandia and Carroll on Saturday, February 24 at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
